What is Hypermobility?

Hypermobility means joints move beyond the normal range of motion—sometimes referred to as being "double-jointed." For some, it's harmless, but it can also be a sign of a connective tissue disorder like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) or Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD). These conditions affect the connective tissues that support the body—such as ligaments, tendons, and skin—making them more fragile. This can lead to joint instability, pain, frequent sprains or dislocations, and symptoms throughout the body, including fatigue, digestive issues, and stretchy skin.

Many people with EDS or HSD also experience comorbid conditions, including Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). POTS is a type of dysautonomia, where the autonomic nervous system struggles to regulate functions like heart rate and blood pressure—often leading to a rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or fainting when standing. MCAS involves overactive mast cells, which release chemicals like histamine inappropriately, causing allergy-like symptoms without a clear trigger.

If any of this resonated with you, we are here to help! Our providers will evaluate your symptoms and lifestyle and work to help you reach your goals. Whether you are only speculating hypermobility or are already diagnosed, we can provide individualized and informed treatment to support your unique needs.

What We Offer

When you're living with a complex, chronic condition like HSD/EDS and POTS, getting care from someone that 'gets it' is one of the most valuable things you can do. At Intrinsic PT, we understand the ins and outs of HSD/EDS, POTS, MCAS, and related conditions, and we're here to help you connect the dots. We also know firsthand how frustrating it can be to find good care, which is why Dr. Rita created Intrinsic Physical Therapy. We truly are a clinic dedicated to people living with conditions that have been undertreated, overlooked, or misdiagnosed. We're here to change the game and get you the help you need.

We provide holistic physical therapy that can address all your symptoms, from head to toe, from joint and muscle pain to fatigue and headaches to abdominal pain and pelvic floor issues to nervous system dysregulation. We understand that symptoms ebb and flow, which is why we are here to work with you to treat what is most important to you that day, all while supporting you in reaching your long term goals.

Even though you may have the same diagnosis as the next person, we know that no two people are the same, which is why we provide completely customized care. We have personalized, holistic physical therapy programs that address all aspects of hypermobility, POTS, and related conditions.

Why We're Experts

When it comes to hypermobility and related conditions, we know it. Dr. Rita has lived it, studied it, and taught it. All of our therapists have undergone extensive training and mentorship to truly be an expert in these conditions.

Why Physical Therapy is Helpful

If you've been diagnosed with HSD/EDS or POTS, you've likely been told to do physical therapy. Physical therapy offers a wide variety of treatment techniques that can help you live well despite these diagnoses, such as hands-on manual therapy, postural retraining, nervous system regulation techniques, prescriptive exercise specific to your body, and functional movement repatterning. Our goal is to utilize our extensive knowledge and skillset to help you feel better in your body so you can meet your goals. Not all physical therapy is the same, and working with a physical therapist who specializes in your diagnoses can make all the difference.

Did you know that we offer virtual visits for people living outside of the Minneapolis area? If you live in greater Minnesota or are out of state, we can still work together! We know it can be difficult to find specialized care in the area of HSD/EDS, POTS, and MCAS, which is why our virtual coaching option can be a great fit if you're looking for 1:1 personalized care, but aren't able to make it to our physical location.
